Amsterdam-based artists Jo Baer and Ansuya Blom will be in conversation about Baer’s extensive oeuvre of paintings drawings and prints, which date back to the 1960s. They will look at her ideas, personal choices and the large variety of notions behind both her earlier minimalist works, as well as her image based paintings made after 1983. A selection of her paintings serves as the red thread for an exchange about painting in a broader sense.

Jo Baer was born in Seattle in 1929 and lives and works in Amsterdam. After being a key figure of the Minimalist movement in New York during the 1960’s and early 1970’s, in 1983 she turned towards narrative imagery and continued on this path, a mode of expression that she once termed as ‘radical figuration’.

Her works are part of various public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Gallery, London, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main. Her most recent solo shows have been held at Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven (2009) and Secession Vienna (2008) and Camden Arts Centre. Her work was part of the Sao Paulo Biennial (2014) and featured in the Whitney Biennial (2017).

Ansuya Blom (Netherlands, 1956) has been working as an artist since 1978. Her drawings and films focus on the relation and friction between the individual and the external world. Her interest lies in moments that arise as a result of a disjointed experience of the world. In her work she looks at the strategies the marginalised individual adopts in order to deal with these disconnections.
Solo-exhibitions of her work have been held at Camden Arts Centre in London; The Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Her films have been screened at The International Film Festival Rotterdam, Rencontres Internationales Paris-Berlin, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her work is part of several private and public collections such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam, Tate Modern London. She is an advisor at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam.
