Activism has changed in the digital era. In the past it took a lot of work to bring people together and start a movement, today social media platforms enable rapid mobilisation and engagement. In most big protests that have occurred over the last decade the Internet has played a major role in organisation, planning and informing. At the same time the Internet, much like โ€˜analogueโ€™ society, is being privatised, disciplined, and capitalised upon. In some ways the same corporations that help us organise, such as Facebook, are part of the problem. Moreover, digital engagement may create the illusion of change, even though the โ€˜realโ€™ world stays the same. Given that every activist has to navigate this multifaceted aspect of the digital era, this edition of New Activism will explore how activists use digital tools to their advantage.
To what extent does digital action actually contribute to change within our daily existence? Are the cynical terms clicktivism or slacktivism justified?

During our next panel โ€˜Digital Age & Activismโ€™ weโ€™re opening up the conversation about these questions and more.

Het Actiefonds is an organisation that supports the struggle for a sustainable and socially just world in which peopleโ€™s lives and the environment are more important than economic interests. We do so by investing in bottom-up social change. It is our mission to support social movements and activists all over the world that fight for equality, sustainability and social justice. We raise money among individual donors only and use that to finance actions and projects globally.

We would like to introduce you to (A)WAKE. On paper, its our new non-profit foundation that will host all our upcoming arts & culture events. In reality, (A)WAKE is a family: a collective of radical new voices that stand against intolerance, economic precarity, and fight against fear of 'the otherโ€™. We navigate between the fields of art and politics. While MONO, Get Me, and (A)WAKE will continue to exist as distinct entities, they complement one another as three pillars of a single movement.
